Nonprofit of Interest Presentation on "It Gets Better"

This presentation I created for my Nonprofit Organizations class focuses on the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit dedicated to uplifting LGBTQ+ youth by sharing stories of hope, resilience, and community. The organization uses digital storytelling and social advocacy to create a supportive global network for young people facing discrimination, identity struggles, and mental health challenges. My presentation provided an in-depth analysis of the organization’s mission, history, and programming, highlighting its three core pillars: storytelling and media, global outreach, and educational resources. I also examined It Gets Better’s financial model, including major sponsors, fundraising efforts, and how they allocate resources to maximize their social impact.

This project embodies my understanding of effective communication, cultural awareness, and inclusivity within the nonprofit sector. Preparing this presentation required me to delve into the nuances of the organization’s communication strategies, examining how “It Gets Better” leverages social media to build a diverse and supportive online community. This analysis demonstrated my ability to interpret and present complex information, translating financial reports, program details, and social media metrics into accessible insights for my audience. The project also allowed me to connect theoretical concepts from the course to a real-world example, showcasing how storytelling can be a powerful tool in fostering empathy and driving social change.

Furthermore, this presentation reinforced my commitment to using communication as a tool for advocacy and inclusivity. By engaging with It Gets Better’s programs and services, I gained insight into the specific challenges LGBTQ+ youth face and how an organization can effectively address them through both digital and in-person channels. This experience not only strengthened my research and presentation skills but also deepened my understanding of the ethical responsibilities communicators hold in advocating for underrepresented communities. Overall, this artifact reflects my growth as a communicator who is mindful, socially aware, and committed to positive change, qualities I will carry forward into my professional life.

Communication Theory and Its True Value: An Application Based on Diverse Thinking

Communication Theory and Its True Value

In my paper, I analyze the statement, "Communication theory is only valuable if it is applied to diverse communities and diverse ways of thinking," reflecting on its implications based on my experiences at Emerson College. The paper emphasizes that communication theories are most impactful when they engage with the complexities of diverse cultural, social, and ethical contexts. Drawing from my coursework, I explore how applying communication theories to real-world scenarios fosters inclusivity and understanding. Through examples from class projects, personal reflections, and my experiences in student leadership, I demonstrate how diverse perspectives strengthen communication strategies, helping to build meaningful connections and drive positive change. This paper advocates for the necessity of ethical decision-making and cultural awareness in communication, emphasizing that theory becomes truly valuable when applied practically and inclusively.
